Ingogo 1881

Ingogo 1881 is a Ascari Scenario and it has to be played with Ascari rules. During the First Boer War, General Colley, commandant of the British troops in Southern Africa, decided to clear his lines of communications from Mount Prospect camp to Newcastle from the Boer threat. He collected a mixed force of 5 companies of the 3/60 Rifles, some artillery and the Mounted Squadron formed by men from 58 Rifle. Arrived at the plateau of Ingogo, known also as Schuinshoogte, he met the Boers who started to fire with precision, pinning the whole column. The precise aim of the Boers neutralized the guns first and pinned the British on the plateau; to reduce pressure, Colley ordered the Mounted Squadron to attack, but the Boer fire blocked the attempt. As well, the charge of Captain MacGregor with a company failed as well. A fierce thunderstorm broke down and the situation for the British worsened as they suffered fatigue and exhaustion; as evening fell, Colley realized that his men would be able to stand there and ordered a retreat; the Boers did not guard the British convicted that they were in no position to move from the heights and thus the British managed to escape.
