📖 About This Game
Unfairy Tales is a game of dark fairy tales with emergent narrative and intertwining stories.
Each player takes the role of a fairy tale stereotype – the Hero, the Maiden, the Trickster, the Fool – and unravels their initial story until they reach a good ending, find another path to their "happily ever after", or abandon all morals and become the villain. There are three initial story setups per character that expand according to the player’s actions, and multiple card encounters that may serve as an episode, a plot twist, or a whole new branch of the story.
Each turn, a player moves their figure on the map and resolves either a Fight or Trick encounter with a creature on their map tile, or a card encounter according to the tile type. To Fight or Trick their adversary, the player rolls a set of Fortune dice representing Wits, Strength, Guile, and Dumb Luck, and modifies them by using their character’s ability, as well as Items, Artifacts and Curses. Although all dice may deal damage to the character's Fortune wheel, losing all Fortune is not the end – the player just picks a new Curse card that shifts the gameplay and may even serve as a powerful tool to resolve encounters.
The game can be played as a competitive adventure for up to four players, as a single player story challenge, or as a semi-coop scenario of heroes against a Villain character.
Return to the grim roots of fairy tales where neither the stories nor the humor are suitable for children.
